A research project aimed at identifying solutions for poverty-stricken families to find safe housing & eventual home ownership

THE PROBLEM

Housing affordability is a serious problem for Australia’s major housing segment. Five Australian cities are in the global top 25 with “severely unaffordable” housing in a 2019 Demographia survey. Sydney coming in third for the most unaffordable. Countless research has shown a correlation between unaffordable housing and homelessness.

The shortage of affordable housing has caused problems such as significant rent burdens (rents which consume a considerable percentage of income), below standard housing and overcrowding. These trends, consequently, have pushed the population homeless and the that number is growing.

 

The last census (2016) revealed homelessness has increased by 14%, 116,427 were officially homeless on that census night according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) as revealed by ABC News.

MAKE OF TEAM

- 5 UX Researcher/Designers (including myself.)

KEY GOALS

- Research and identify the user needs of occupants and their families

- Design a solution in a form of a digital prototype to address the needs of the above-mentioned user

MY ROLE

Conducting user research, journey mapping, user persona, high-fidelity and low-fidelity prototypes, wireframing, usability testing and stakeholder presentation with Head Start Homes board members.

Interviewed customers living in community housing accommodations, identifying information such as their motivation to buy their own homes, realistic timeline of potential purchase, barriers affecting their potential home purchase.

 

Conduct other internal & external research such as current service review, quantitative surveys, reporting findings for competitor analysis and methodologies to Director.

Undergo customer journey mapping and user personas.

Conducted low-fidelity prototyping methods such as sketching, wireframing and high fidelity prototyping via InVision. Conduct usability testing on prototype with the users.
